Final Reflection

At the beginning of this semester, I worried about the lesson because, I didn’t know anything about this lesson and it seemed too difficult. As the time passed, I had some difficulties about this lesson, but I have learned many things which will be useful for me.

At the beginning of this semester, I said “I don’t want to be a traditional teacher, so I have to improve myself all the time.” This lesson gave us many opportunities to improve ourselves and become good teachers.

I enjoyed in this lesson and I learned a lot of things from it. I hope I will use all of them in my classes. Thanks for everything teacher 🙂

Second Life and Weebly

At twelfth week, our topics were second life and weebly. I’ve known these sites, but I haven’t used both of them before. Our teacher mentioned both of them in the lesson. They are very useful for us.  

Second Life is a 3D world where everyone you see is a real person and every place you visit is built by people just like you. We can use it for educational purposes. It allows us to visit other countries without leaving the classroom, engage in new forms of communication with others, and learn about other cultures and acquire new skills doing so. In addition to this, it gives oopportunities for collaboration and social interaction.

Weebly is a web building tool. It offers a simple step-by-step website developing process that literally anyone can use to its fullest potential. It allows us to create classroom websites, student e-portfolios, and websites for assigned projects. It’s simple to use, and appropriate for all student ages.

Podcasting

At eleventh week, our topic was podcasting. Podcasting is the preparation and distribution of audio files using RSS to the computers of subscribed users. These files may then be uploaded to digital music or multimedia players like the iPod. We can easily create a podcast from a digital audio file.

Podcasting has many advantages in education. The basic advantage of podcasting is the portability and convenience of listening to learning resources anytime and anywhere without requiring extensive technical knowledge. They can be downloaded to all kinds of mobile devices, such as MP3 players, mobile phones, and computers. Learning materials downloaded into mobile devices can be listened to by learners in their own time and place. In addition to this, a podcast of a lesson that can be downloaded by students can become invaluable study aid for the student. At any given point in time, the student has the podcast available for reference. A student who had difficulty understanding initially, can now learn the material at his or her own pace.

Digital Storytelling

At tenth week, our topic was digital storytelling. I’m familiar with it. Digital storytelling is the process of writing about a story, and adding the multimedia elements of voice, imagery, and music to create a visual story.

Firstly our teacher mentioned movie maker. Movie maker is a program that allows us to create and edit videos. It is manufactured by Microsoft Windows and is available for free.  Then he mentioned storyjumper website. It gives parents, kids, teachers and authors a fun set of intuitive tools for writing and illustrating kids stories.

We can use both of them for educational purposes. They allows us to prepare materials that are suitable for needs and levels of students.  For example, we can prepare listening materials and explain a topic with movie maker. We can also prepare reading materials by using storyjumper site. I think both of them are interesting and motivating for the students.

Facebook, Twitter and Skype

At ninth week, our topics were Facebook, Twitter and Skype. We’ve known these sites for a long time. Our teacher mentioned each of the shortly in the lesson.

Facebook is a popular social networking website.It allows us to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with our friends, family and colleagues. In addition to this, Twitter is also a popular social networking website. It allows us to send short text messages (140 characters in length), called “tweets”, to our friends, or “followers.” We can use both of them for educational purposes. For example, we can collaborate with other teachers and exchange information with them through Facebook. We can also reach parents who are incapable to come to school and convey details to them about school and events through Facebook. We can get helpful information for us through Twitter. We can also make quick announcements to our students through Twitter.

Skype is a popular voice communication service.  It offers free-calling between subscribers and low-cost calling to people who don’t use the service. In addition to standard telephone calls, Skype enables file transfers, texting, video chat and videoconferencing. We can also use it for educational purposes. For example, we can learn from other teachers, connect with other cultures and expand our knowledge through Skype.

WIZIQ

At eighth week, our topic was online conferences. They are very useful. They give us an opportunity to teach or learn online.

In the lesson, our teacher explained wiziq. It has many advantages.  For example, teachers and students can participate in it from anywhere. In addition to this, it is free for everyone. We need only to join in it.

It puts teachers and students together regardless of the boundaries. Conferences get recorded so that teachers and students can visit them again later. We can explain concepts by using documents, pictures, videos or presentation. Students may seek online help for homework or assignment queries in wiziq.

Online Classroom

At seventh week, our topic was online classroom. Online classroom is a place where the members of a group can share information, ask questions and get extra help. Online classroom offers us to create continuous learning. They are very beneficial for shy students. These sites give them an opportunity to express themselves easily. Our teacher presented two websites. One of them is http://www.nicenet.org/, another is http://campus.dokeos.com/

Both of them are very  useful, but nicenet is much better than campus.dokeos, I think. Because, we can share documents (doc, pdf, image or video) and links, in campus.dokeos, but nicenet is limited. We can share only links in nicenet.

We can use campus.dokeos for many purposes. For example, we can prepare quizzes (multiple choice tests, cloze test, and matching) and share them with our students.  In addition to this, we can select its features according to our students’ needs. For example, we can hide it if we don’t want our students to use glossary. It offers us to communicate with our students outside the classroom through chat, blogs or forums..
